– written by martin – – click here for the english version – Vor drei Wochen wollten Lisa und ich auf den Mt. Dana steigen. Dana? Soweit so gut.

Lisa & I climbed Mt. Dana about three weeks ago. With its 13061 ft, it is the highest thirteener in the Yosemite National Park. And it’s just 19 meters shy of beeing a four-thousander. When we got to the ranger station at the Tioga Pass, I asked the ranger about the trailhead for Mt. Dana. She answered my question with another question…
Me: Does the trail up to Mt. Dana start here? At the parking, a couple next to us is just packing their backpacks. Me: Are you guys climbing Mt. Dana as well? So far, so good. We took our backpacks and started hiking, with pretty low expectations, but a lot of motivation. Soon there’s snow on the trail and maybe 30 min later we are infront of the snow field. We probably could have walked straight through it, but not with keeping our socks dry. Therefore, we decided to traverse 260 ft (80 m) to the left and then continue uphill. Walking just aside the snowfield. The last few hundred yards (or meters) were a bit steeper, but there was definitely no need for crampons or ice axes. On top of Mt. Dana, at 3981m, we tried everything to make it up to 4000m, but it did not work out… even with Lisa on my shoulders ;) Half way down, we met the couple from the parking. With crampons on their shoes, of course.
On our way from St. George to Mt. Dana we stopped in Las Vegas, Death Valley, Bishop, Yosemite, San Francisco & Lake Tahoe and got the last visitor of our trip. # Las Vegas

After about two weeks, it was time to say good bye again, as Bene got a ride to Yosemite Valley. But not for long. Lisa & I wanted to stay a bit longer, but then bad weather was coming and we could not miss to drive over the Tioga pass, before it closes for the season. From there we startet our hike to Mt. Dana, even without crampons and ice axes. And continued our way to Yosemite Valley. As the weather was still bad, we just stayed a couple of days, but picked up Bene for another two weeks. # Lake Tahoe
Arriving at Lake Tahoe, we were pretty surprised by the temperatures! During one night it got as cold as 18°F (-8°C). At the camping we intended to spend the first night, we turned around again, as we were afraid to be stuck by the next morning. Then it was time to get back on the rocks! There are plenty of areas all around Lake Tahoe. On our way back to the camping, after the second day of bouldering, we got to see our first bear! And the great thing about it: not in a zoo, but in the wild!
And almost every evening for dinner, me made it just in time for the sunset to the south end of the lake. >>>> here <<<< you will find many more pictures. |
