Kudle Beach, Gokarna

Life is simply wonderful!! ;)

As passengers on Rouletout we arrived on January 27th on Kudle Beach in Gokarna and together with Berna & Ulf, we spent eight relaxing and fun days.

Locals are hardly to find at the beach because its a very popular spot for travellers who are interested in yoga and smoking joints. The only indian people you will find are those who run the restaurants and bungalows or sell snacks and souveniers at the beach. Due to the fact that the restaurants try to satisfy the taste of western tourists, it is hard to find indian dishes on the menus. Those you find are adapted to western taste which means that spices are missing. The reason we went to the beach is to relax from our first exhausting climbing week in Badami. When we arrived at the beach our plan was to stay there for four days – go running at the beach and enjoy the sun with 30°C – and as soon as we feel recovered go back to Badami to finish our climbing projects (6c & 7b). But sometimes plans turn out differently! On our third day, during a wonderful walk from one beach to another on a steep path, Martin slipped and rolled over his left ankle and could not walk anymore. After one painful night and a swollen foot we decided to find a doctor. An owner of a hotel told me that unfortunately there is no doctor in Gokarna who is familiar with fractures. The next one is 1,5 hours away in a village called Udupi. After asking him again, if there is really no doctor in Gokarna, he mentioned that there is one, but he is only a general doctor. Nevertheless we decided to go first to the general doctor and depending on his medical report we will decide what to do next. As we arrived at the street clinic we did not have to wait too long. The doctors english was very good and after twisting around Martins ankle, he diagnosed that he does not have a fracture, but there might be a torn ligament. For a quick cure he needs to rest his ankle for the next seven days and should walk as less as possible. Happy that he doesn’t have a fracture, we paid for the medical report 50RS (about 0,80EUR), received some pain releasing pills and went back to our beach bungalow.

Due to this incident we spent some more days at the beach. The rest of Febuary we will explore the south of India and will continue climbing in Badami and Hampi in March. Martins anckle is doing better from day to day but still needs some rest. Three days ago we said goodbye to Ulf, Berna, Mudlu and Rouletout after giving us a lift further south. They are now on their way to Myanmar. Let’s see if our paths cross again. During the last weeks we had a lot of fun with them and really enjoyed their company. At the beach Martin and Ulf were playing a lot backgammon while I tought Berna how to sew on her sewing machine. I also sewed a nice skirt for myself.

We are now in Madikeri, where we again enjoy the indian lifestyle -without many tourists. A wonderful, small town in the middle of coffee and other spice plantations. Tomorrow we will head more south to support an NGO (RASTA) for the next two weeks. You can check out their webpage to see what they are doing.

Life is simply wonderful! :)
