South Africa: 73 days in a nut shell

Was bisher geschah:

# Waterval Boven – 4 Wochen
Die ersten vier Wochen verbrachten wir im besten Sportklettergebiet Südafrikas. Bei perfektem Kletterwetter während des südafrikanischen Winters, konnten sowohl Lisa wie auch ich unsere bislang schwierigsten Routen klettern. Untertags hatten wir (fast) immer strahlend blauen Himmel und angenehme 20°C. Lisa konnte dabei ihre erste 6c am Fels klettern und legte auch gleich noch zwei weitere nach. Und ich konnte mit Lotter’s Desire meine erste 7b+ klettern und gleichzeitig eine der besten in Süd Afrika.

# Roadtrip – 6 Wochen
Müssten wir Südafrikaner in zwei Worten beschreiben, wären dies wohl freundlich und hilfsbereit. Für uns, bzw. mitteleuropäische Verhältnisse, fast ein wenig zu freundlich. Wir brauchten somit jemanden der uns wieder auf den Boden holt und als Kontrast, zu der Freundlichkeit die wir in Südafrika erfahren, dient. Jemanden der egozentrisch und grantig ist… ein Wiener musste her! Niko tat uns den Gefallen, nahm sich am Flughafen in Johannesburg ein Auto und holte uns in Boven ab. Gemeinsam ging es in einem der geräumigsten Mietautos, einem Kia Picanto, von Boven bis nach Kapstadt. In diesen sechs Wochen waren wir in zwei Nationalparks (Kruger & Hluhluwe), zum Klettern in Sabi, Swaziland, Durban, Umgeni und Montagu und zum Surfen in Coffee Bay und Jeffreys Bay. Kurz vor Kapstadt waren auf unserer Kilometeranzeige 5555km abzulesen. Am Weg kamen wir auch am weltweit höchsten Bungee Sprung vorbei, 216m in Tiefe. Es war mein erster und gleichzeitig auch letzter Sprung. Denn der so oft beschriebene „Adrenalinstoß“ blieb bei mir leider aus…

# Rocklands
Seit acht Tagen sind wir nun in den Rocklands. Einem der besten Bouldergebiete der Welt. Bislang hatte Lisa aber leider nicht viel davon, da sie sich beim Sportklettern den Knöchel beleidigt hat. Sie macht sich dafür aber ganz gut als Wasserträger und Spotter. Bei mir läufts hingegen recht gut. Nach ein paar Tagen einklettern, stehen mit „Minki“ und „Poison Dwarf“ zwei der besten 7b’s der Rocklands auf meiner Ticklist. Doch bereits Morgen wird auch Lisa ihre ersten Boulder angehen…

What happened so far:

# Waterval Boven – 4 weeks
We spent our first four weeks in Waterval Boven – the best sport climbing crag of South Africa. With the perfect conditions during the South African winter, Lisa and I could climb our hardest routes so far. During the day the temperature went up to 20°C (70°F) and the sky was as clear and blue, as it could be. Lisa did her first 6c on the rock, followed by two more. For me it was my first 7b+ and with Lotter’s Desire one of the best in South Africa.

#Roadtrip – 6 weeks
If we had to describe South Africans in two words, it would be friendly and helpful. For the two of us, or compared to European standards, almost a little bit too friendly. That is why we needed someone to bring us back down to earth. A contrast to the friendliness we experienced here in South Africa. Someone who is egocentric and grumpy… someone from Vienna! Niko did us the favour, flew into South Africa, rented a car at the airport and picked us up in Boven. In one of the biggest rental cars available, a Kia Picanto, we drove all the way to Cape Town. In these six weeks we went to two national parks (Kruger & Hluhluwe), climbed in Sabie, Swaziland, Durban, Umgeni & Montagu and went surfing at Coffee Bay and Jeffreys Bay. In total more than 5555km (3450 mi) on the road. Along the way we drove by the highest bungee jump in the world, with 216m (710 ft). It was my first and a t the same time my last jump, as the often described ‘adrenalin rush’ failed to appear…

# Rocklands
Today is our seventh day at Rocklands. One of the best bouldering spots in the world. So far it was not too much fun for Lisa, as she is still injured from a bad fall during sport climbing. But she does a pretty good job spotting, while I’m bouldering ;) After a few days of getting used to the rock, I could send ‘Minki’ and ‘Poison Dwarf’, two of the best 7b’s at Rocklands. But tomorrow Lisa will be back on the rocks…
